DNA of Democracy

It is an honor and an even greater pleasure for me to be one of 150 participants in the Hashtag#dnaofdemocracy project who are allowed to express their wishes for a contemporary constitution. Being published in a campaign and a book together with Margot Friedländer, Maja Göpel and my personal hero, the producer Tyron Ricketts, is more than just a reassurance that we can only develop our country together. It is also a reminder that you can only be part of something if you are willing to share something yourself.

75 years ago, Konrad Adenauer signed the Basic Law - the DNA of our democracy. Based on the inviolability of human dignity and universal human rights, it safeguards our free coexistence and our most binding values. More than 75 years later, it is time to think and argue anew about our common constitution. Our society has evolved and we are facing new questions to which we can only find answers together. The campaign and the book can of course only be an impetus for this.

I would like to thank the initiators Daniel Koller, Tomaso Baldessarini, Wigan Salazar and Melanie Probandt and the more than 50 people and organizations, such as Deutsche Telekom, Graf von Faber-Castell, Correctiv, Cupra, MSL Group Germany, ProSiebenSat.1, WallDecaux etc., who have supported the project so far.

The topic was AI and creativity and the subsequent discussion lasted much longer than the lecture itself. The possibilities of the technology were discussed in an honest and stimulating manner, without being able to definitively answer the many open questions. Perhaps the following applies for the moment: only active debate will "really" take us further. Just a few days later, the exhibition "Goodnews" opened in the FRIEDA 23 gallery in the Rostock art school, which deals with the changing media and their influence on our behavior. I took part in the group exhibition with some of my WORTSTOERUNGEN, which have been published weekly in the Berliner Zeitung for the past year. Thanks to Mettie and the whole team behind the scenes!

Each place and each circumstance has allowed a type of action or a form of collaboration. The "industrial capacities" of some have allowed collaborative actions to be generated that have facilitated the production of necessary artifacts. The communicative abilities of others have also allowed collaborative actions to be generated in which visual objects have been created that move, explain, protect, appeal to behaviour, seduce and inform, and manage to generate awareness and encourage a disoriented and distressed society.

The "poster" has never disappeared from our environment but during this pandemic it has been reborn with strength and there are many actions of this kind that have been developed, but none has reached the level of relevance and internationalization that we have promoted from the Official College of Graphic Design of Catalonia, with the project "From the Trenches. One day less, one more design".

During the last couple of years – especially during the last one – Germany faces an increase in rightwing “angry citizens” (Wutbürger), who are officially known as “worried citizens” ever since the refugee crisis started. Under the disguise of protecting their own families, traditions & own existence, they pursue a fierce chevy against homosexuals, immigrants & liberalism thus making ground for rightwing cells & organisations, heavily creeping in the middle of our society. We say: History should not repeat itself! Find out more!

... One person who firmly believes in the relevance of illustration is the Berlin designer Raban Ruddigkeit; “An illustration offers an individual view and thus shows the wealth of the world,” says Ruddigkeit. “Why are people still interested in something new despite all the picture sequences? Because they want to understand and recognize the world. Illustration can be more insightful than, for example, photography”.

At the end of the nineties Ruddigkeit prepared the relaunch of the Berlin magazine Das Magazin, one of the oldest German general-interest magazines, and looked for new ideas. “Illustration was simply dead. There were still the old eighties bunnies from the F.A.Z. Magazine, nobody could see that anymore." Since then, the Berliner himself has contributed a little to a better overview – with the publication of several Freistil books.

Ruddigkeit does not see any threat to the genre due to a change in the media. One should not always put everything on the bad media. Markets are constantly changing. “Those who implement good ideas well are also able to design icons that attract attention on the Internet.“

In a lecture at the academy they introduced the students to German illustration. Thanks to Meran Salomon, Adi Stern & all the others to whom we owe such an impressive experience.
